  • Before you leave phone ahead to your hotel and confirm that you will be able to make a modem/analog call from your room. Also ask which type of phone plug the hotel uses. If it is not the US RJ-11 standard, then be sure to take an international phone plug kit with you. These kits can be  obtained from a local computer store.

    Phone Plugs

The type of phone plug used at the wall jack may vary from country to country and from hotel to hotel. Most developed countries have their own specific type of telephone connections. There are a few dozen types of plugs used around the world.

The "American-style" plug , the US RJ-11, is the closest to what might be considered an international "standard". This type of plug has been adopted in many countries worldwide, including North America, Greece, Spain, Ireland, most of Central America and the Far East.

Major hotels in countries where the US RJ-11 plug is the standard will typical have a plug for you to use with your modem line. In countries where the US RJ-11 system is not standard you may need to use a plug adapter that will allow you to physically connect your modem's phone cable to the wall jack. A worst case scenario will be if a phone in your hotel room is hardwired at the phone and the wall jack. This type of situation can be frustrating. Calling ahead to your destination will help prepare you for this kind of situation.
